The Catholic Youth Interscholastic Futsal League - Fall River, Massachusetts

:: CYFL Week #1 - 2005

01/09/2005- Fall River, Massachusetts  Week number 1 of the 2005 Catholic Youth Futsal season is now over but not before a great weekend of games and fun.  League volunteers were on hand to assist in last minute registration needs for teams, coaching and supervising.  Visitors poured into the bleachers of the Lafrance Gymnasium at Bishop Connolly High School to watch games from 12 noon to 8 PM with participants ranging in age from 4 to 14.  Games ran the full spectrum of talent, from novice youth players on up to All Star talent that we hope will represent our area Catholic Youth in the upcoming Massachusetts State Cup Championships held in Norfolk Massachusetts on January 22nd and 23rd.

By every measure this first weekend of games was another HUGE success.  From the strong number of participants, smooth registration process, quality of play, officiating and facilities, the league is allowing the opportunity for many of our area children to get out and participate in a healthy, fun and wholesome activity.

Game Summaries: Game #1  After a brief clinic by Coach Bill Sampaio, St. Stanislaus U8 team beat out Holy Name U8 by a margin of 5 to 1.

Game #2  Both of St. Michael's U8 teams squared off against each other, coached by brothers Eric and Derik Costa with Derik's U8's team winning out with a final score of 3-2.

Game #3  St. Stanislaus U10 team edged out St. Michael's U10s by a margin of 3-1 with Keegan Larue stepping up with many outstanding plays for the winning team.

Game #4  St. Stanislaus U10 team, playing in their 2nd match of the season with a back to back double pulled off another win.  This time they defeated the aggressive Notre Dame U10 team 5-1.  Although a large scoring difference, Notre Dame put on several unsuccessful scoring attacks.

Game #5  Kirk Murphy lead the scoring for Holy Name U12's with a pair of goals but not before falling short to the St. Michael's U12 team who won this contest with a final score of 4-3.

Game #6  Holy Name U12's Stefan Amaral came lit up the scoreboard in this match scoring a total of 5 of his teams 9 goals, convincingly beating the St. Stanislaus U12 team 9-5.  St. Stanislaus efforts were lead by Peter Lee and Patrick O'Connor each scoring 2 goals for their team.

Game #7  St. Stanislaus U14 team won out convincingly against the Notre Dame U14 team who entered the contest short a few players. Without the depth to their bench Notre Dame tired and fell short with a final score of 8-1.  Scoring for St. Stanislaus came from many players but none was more exciting than the penalty kick rocketed by Marcia Rzasa.

Game #8  Holy Name's U14 Girls stepped onto the court with Coach Maxi Carey and won the final game of the day over Notre Dame but only by the narrowest of margins, 4-3.  Both teams put in great efforts with Sarah Carey leading the way for Holy Name with 2 goals.

This week's games marked the opening day of our 2nd year of futsal games being held at Bishop Connolly High School.  Our number of participants is stronger than it was at this time last year with many new players participating from Holy Name, Holy Trinity, Notre Dame, St. Anne's, Ss. Peter & Paul, St. Michael's and St. Stanislaus.   The program is definitely growing and the children absolutely enjoy the game!

This all-parent/volunteer program is making sure that we get the word out to all of those who want to participate.  If players out their want to play, we'll find a way to get them on the court, it's never too late.  Feel free to Sign up today and get ready to play some FUTSAL!
